Overview

Expression I'll circle back (on this / to this).
Meaning (After checking) I will come back to this matter.

Politeness Neutral business English. Adding a timeframe builds trust.

1. Meaning & Nuance

Circle back comes from the phrase "to go full circle and return to the starting point." Merriam-Webster defines it as an idiom meaning "to return to a place or point," and Dictionary.com explains it as "to return to a previous point, topic of conversation, or stage of a process." In a business context, it is used with the meaning "I cannot answer right now, but I will check and return to this topic."

It is particularly useful in community meetings. When a question arises that requires checking data or hearing the opinion of another maintainer, you can settle it by saying "I'll answer later" without consuming meeting time.

However, this expression has a known weakness. Because it is used so frequently like corporate jargon, if you do not state when you will return, it can sound like "an excuse to brush things off vaguely ." Therefore, it is best to attach a timeframe or method along with it. You can use phrases like I'll circle back by Friday or I'll circle back on the issue once I've checked the logs. And you must actually return. Fulfilling the promise by sharing the results at the agreed time is part of the expression's meaning.

Both prepositions on and to are used. Circle back on this feels like "regarding this matter," and circle back to this feels like "returning to this topic." When returning to a person, use circle back with someone.

2. Examples

Situation 1: In a community meeting

I don't have the benchmark numbers with me right now. Let me check and circle back on the issue by Thursday.

Situation 2: On Slack

Good question. I need to check with the storage folks first. I'll circle back here once I hear from them.

once I hear from them means "as soon as I get a response from them." It clarifies the condition for returning.

Situation 3: When actually returning

Circling back on this: I ran the benchmark again, and the regression is about 8% on large VMs. Details are in the issue.

Starting with Circling back on this signals, "This is the matter we postponed last time."
