LFCS — Linux Foundation System Administrator
This Is What the LFCS Exam Looks Like
In one line
The LFCS is a practical exam, and you must score 67% or more within 120 minutes to pass.
Why read this first
The most common failure in certification study is not from not knowing the content but from going in without knowing the shape of the exam. If you do not know what score is the passing line, how tight the time is, or which domains have many problems, you cannot set your preparation priorities.
Official specifications
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Format | Practical |
| Time limit | 120 minutes |
| Passing score | 67% |
| Length | 17–20 tasks |
| Exam fee | $445 (includes 1 retake) |
| Validity | 2 years |
These values are taken from the candidate documents at docs.linuxfoundation.org. The certification
introduction page does not state the passing score or the number of questions, so if you prepare by looking only at that page,
you walk into the exam room without knowing the passing line.
Domain weights
| Domain | Weight | | |---|---:|| | Operations Deployment | 25% | | | Networking | 25% | | | Storage | 20% | | | Essential Commands | 20% | | | Users and Groups | 10% | |
Domains with larger weights have more problems. When you allocate your study time, use these ratios as the standard. This practice exam also distributes its questions in the same ratios.
This is where the answers split
When you grade a practice exam, the questions you get wrong cluster in one form. You get them wrong not because you do not know the content but because you missed which of two similar concepts is being asked about. When the pairs below come to mind while you read a question, sort them first by the criterion in the third column.
| This | That | What separates them |
|---|---|---|
| systemctl enable | start | If it must come up after a reboot too, enable |
| hard link | symbolic link | If it crosses filesystems, symbolic |
| umask | chmod | If it applies to files created from now on, umask |
| nice | ionice | If it is about disk priority, ionice |
| journalctl -u | -b | If you limit it to this boot, -b |
This does not mean you should memorize the table. If you mark which pair the questions you got wrong fell on, the place to study again becomes much narrower than a domain name.
What you can look at while solving
This exam has no browser. There is no internet either. All you can see is the man pages and --help and info in the terminal, and the distribution documentation under /usr/share/doc/.
So the way to prepare itself is different. Other practical exams have you practice finding things in documentation, but this exam requires practicing finding commands with man -k (or apropos). The habit of solving things with a web search becomes a weakness as it is.
What you actually experience at the exam site
There are many cases where people know all the content but get flustered by the procedure and lose time.
The exam is taken with online proctoring on PSI's Bridge platform. The proctor's video verification procedure takes up to 30 minutes, and during this time the questions do not open and the time limit does not start. Even so, you should keep your schedule clear for 30 minutes of check-in plus the exam time.
There are four things checked at check-in. Agreeing to the nondisclosure agreement, a government-issued ID that matches the registered name exactly, showing the room by panning the webcam, and closing unapproved software. Because of the last item, turning off background programs such as Slack or cloud sync in advance saves time.
There are some conditions that are easy to trip over when taking the exam in Korea. The ID must have a signature, so a passport is the safest. You can use only one monitor, and dual monitors are not supported. There must be no items on the desk or under it, writing on paper is prohibited, and reading the questions aloud is not allowed either. On a company network or VPN, AWS S3 access is blocked and it sometimes gets caught in the pre-check.
You can change a reservation only up to 24 hours before the start. And if you book and do not show up, you not only lose the exam fee but also lose your retake eligibility. Results arrive by email within 24 hours after the exam ends.
The exam fee includes 1 retake, and you must finish both the exam and the retake within 12 months of the original purchase date. There is no official waiting period, so you can take it again right after you get the result. Rather than putting it off because you are not perfectly prepared, it is often better to take it once and find out which domain is weak.
The certification is valid for 2 years. The CARE program introduced in 2026 overlaps with this. If you pass CKA or CKAD, KCNA is renewed automatically, and if you pass CKS, KCSA and CKA are renewed automatically. However, you have to earn the lower-level certifications first for this chain to work. If you earn CKA first and KCNA later, that CKA does not renew KCNA. If you are aiming for Golden Kubestronaut, this order decides the renewal burden for the next several years.
How to use this practice exam
The time limit is set the same as the real exam. The remaining time is shown at the top of the screen, it is submitted automatically when time runs out, and unanswered questions are treated as wrong. That is because the real exam also grades only what you have solved at that point.
It is important to sit and solve it through in one go. If you look things up as you solve, the score goes up, but that score does not predict the real exam. What you want to check is not whether you know it but whether you clear the passing line within the time limit.
After reading the explanations of the questions you got wrong, study again the domain those questions belong to.
